The trip is wonderful so far....kids are great and Peru is beautiful, the Andes are as beautiful as I remember. Tomorrow we head deep into the Andes to work at a school...we are building a kitchen and carrying up a stove, pots, etc. so it will be good training for the Inca Trail. Then we will return to give gifts and play with the children, as well as spend the night. THEN we begin hiking. Everyone is feeling well, though the altitude certainly affects us.
Day 1

7 hours after our departure from LAX, we arrived in Panama City excited but at the same time exhausted. Our layover was brief and within the next 20 minutes we found ourselves on our way to Lima. We coasted into Lima at the noon hour and hightailed it to the hotel for some well earned rest. The esteemed Gustavo greeted us at the Lima airport. We had a lot of hambre by then, so in a few hours we chomped into a voluptuous meal of roasted chicken and fries with a platter of beet salad topped with avocado. We ate in a plaza with excellent views of the Pacific. We slept.

Day 2

We woke at the godforsaken hour of 3 o'clock in the morning. The morning was made worse by the inability of some people to set their alarms (Nick). We ate a rudimentary breakfast consisting of one piece of toast. The plane from Lima took off at 6 in the morning, arriving in Cuzco at 730. We all felt tired from the altitude.  Once we got our bags, we got in a bus and went to our hotel.  It was located in a small street, and although the rooms were small, the atmosphere was very nice.  We met different tourists from france and spain, and got water and snakcs from a nearby store.  We went to the village of saqusaywaman which was amazing.  The giant structures were incredible.  We then went back to the hotel and rested, and later went to get dinner at a pizza restaurant., While walking to the restaurant we bargained with streeet peddlers for amazing quality goods and were taken aback by the authenticity and enthusiasm of the Puruvian people. When we got back to the hotel, we  went to bed early and finally got rid of our jetlag.

Despite some struggles with altitude sickness and fatigue, all would say that are first two days in Peru were a novel experience, and that it both excited and prepared us for the upcoming Inca trail. Unfortunately, we won't be able to update this blog in the next 3/4 days because we will be venturng into the mountains.
